“ I haven’t seen anyone wear a beavertail in forever!” Could be worn alone, or combined with a long john suit to cover the lower body.

  • Beavertail– A type of wetsuit popular in the 50’s and 60’s, the beavertail covered the torso, and had a small flap that locked around the crouch (seriously).
  • “I scored this killer beachbreak the other day!” Can be great for beginners, but also produce very heavy waves for advanced surfers. Beachbreaks are all sand bottom, and typically have waves that break in numerous places.
  • Beachbreak– Refers to the bottom contour of a surf spot.
  • “That guy just pulled into a huge barrel.”
  • Barrel– A wave that stands up and pitches over so that there is a hollow inside that can be ridden by a skilled surfer.
  • “ Bro, did you see that barney out there snaking all the waves?” Can also refer to a person who snakes, drops in, or otherwise doesn’t know what they are doing but pretend to.
  • Barney– A person who acts like a fool in the water.
  • “ That guy really needs to work on his backside.” Riding a wave backside, or backhand, means riding with your back facing the wave.
  • Backside– Refers to the direction we ride waves.
  • Taking off behind the peak of a wave and going around or through it. A barreling wave on the North Shore of Hawaii. Big, heavy, without fins, and made of wood, these boards were ridden by the original watermen and women.
  • Alaia– The original surfboard ridden by Hawaiians.
  • There are many different types of aerial maneuvers.
  • Air– a surfing maneuver where the surfer gets their board completely out of the water over the wave, and land back on the wave and ride away.
  • “Whoa! Did you see those teepees coming in today!?”
  • A frame – a type of wave with well-defined peak that tapers off in both right and left directions.
